If only it was meant to be

Former Commodore James Norrington heard his name called by a very familiar voice. He raised himself from the mud, ignoring the pigs and the smell. His eyes slowly adjusting on the person standing over him.

"James Norrington, what has the world done to you?" Elizbeth Swann spoke to him with worry in her voice. She gently helped Norrington up noticing he was a bit unsteady. Holding on to him and ignoring the body odor, they left arm in arm together.

"Elizabeth? What are you doing? Why are you here?" Norrington spoke his voice sounding a bit shaky.

"Looking for Will. How did you get here James?" she asked curiosity in her voice.

"We went thru the damned Hurricane and I wound up here. Alone. No one to trust." He replied steadily to her.

"If only we were meant to be Elizabeth. I still care about you. I would have protected you. Kept you from harm." James spoke calmly as they walked towards Captain Jack Sparrows ship, The Black Pearl.

"I know James. I care for you, but I love Will." Elizabeth reminded him as she noticed Jack talking to Mr. Gibbs.

"Jack Sparrow. I’m looking for the man I love." Elizabeth told him confidently as she swayed up to him. And ignoring James’ throwing up behind her.

James turned around noticing the two people approaching him. "Sorry mate can’t help you."

"I’m looking for Will, Jack." Elizabeth spoke to him realizing that he mistook her for a boy.

Jack was surprised and replied, "Elizabeth?" He eyed her up and down not recognizing in her clothes. "I’ve got a dress on board the ship." He said turning pointing towards the Black Pearl.

"Very funny Jack. I want to find Will." She spoke calmly to him.

"IS that all you want love? To find Will?" Jack asked sounding hopefull.

"Yes. It is." Elizabeth replied uncertain as to what Jack was going to do.

He placed the compass in her hand and opened the lid. And moved away quickly waiting for it to stop. He looked and shouted, "Mr. Gibbs we have a heading!"

"Aye Captain." Mr. Gibbs replied back looking at the compass once James and Elizabeth boarded Jack’s ship.

Towards the beginning, Norrington is in character. However, I don't think he would just openly tell her how much he cares for her, especially immediately after seeing her for the first time in months. It seems that James and Elizabeth's relationship has always been tense and strained, and though they may open up to each other after a lot of (awkward) coaxing, it just wouldn't come out right away. The hurricane also deeply affected him, and he probably would talk about it with a bit more restraint and would be more pained by it.
